On his 22nd birthday he joined the Brickhill Burke theatrical management team in Johannesburg. Entertainment Specialist Having learnt from the best, he was introduced to spectacular entertainment, cabaret, musicals and events. Brickhill Burke’s Follies Spectacular, Minstrel Follies, Meropa Drums of Africa, Sound of Music and Gypsy, during their 8 week seasons in each of the major centres in South Africa. Having gained his experience @ His Majesty’s Theatre in the formal theatre environment, working on hit West End shows like Bertha Egnos’ Ipi Tombi, Clarence Wilsons’ Meropa, Presto Magic Show, Cole (Cole Porter) & Equus and Richiardi a world famous magician. Locally Pippin, Birds of Paradise and Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice’s Joseph and his amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat etc. Casino Resort Opening He was Entertainment & Special Events Manager - Opening the Wild Coast Casino resort in Kwa-Zulu Natal & directing (Gwen Brisco – Bob Andersen – from Las Vegas, Dancin Wild, Wild Frenzy and Champagne Follies shows. Eugene was a member of a team responsible for organising of first ANC Bosberaad and the drafting of the new Labour legislation conferences at the Aloe Ridge Hotel just outside Johannesburg. Mega stars of Pop! Mass hysteria was caused at Shopping Centres and Night Clubs when the touring shows of super stars often being mistaken for the real Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Madonna "Look-a-Likes" from Las Vegas – being featured in the SA Tour. Another exciting club promotion that he was involved in was the staging of the Planet Dance World FREESTYLE Finals in South Africa. Three Planet dance CD's were launched and sold in excess of a million copies. Major South African Launch for Spoornet When Spoornet decided to launch a new train service Shozolosa Meyl service they called on him to conceptualize the national corporate identity launch at Expo Centre, with the artistic and technical control, plus simultaneous satellite broadcast to all regions, falling under his watchful eye. The Ministers Jeff Radebe and Dullah Omar were keynote speakers. Post launches in East London and Bloemfontein with regional presentations. This was a R3 Million rand launch. Major Retail Shopping Centre Having done that and been there, Eugene changed direction into the Retail World with the opening of the Tyger Valley shopping centre in Cape Town, as promotions manager, this was the largest shopping centre in the Western Cape at the time. The Shopping Centre initiated late night shopping featured a fully equipped promotions hydraulic stage with lighting, sound and a white grand piano and several resident entertainers, for spectacular promotions and events. Returning to Johannesburg to conceive and direct the Closing Ceremony of the last Rand Show at the Milner Park Showground. This spectacular show with the theme Yesterday Today and Tomorrow featured a cast of thousands, animals, acrobats, marching bands, army displays and a reenactment of the Paul Kruger opening the first Rand Show in the late 1900’s. Snack Food Company After joining Simba snack Food Company he literally turned this corporate multi-billion rand company into a fun loving innovative and market leader with spectacular events, entertainment and outside event driven promotions. He was responsible for increasing the sales @ The NASEC Expo centre within a 2 week period in excess of R300K. As an Out of the Box thinker he conceptualized several of South Africa’s biggest Motor vehicle launches i.e Volkswagen Jetta, BMW’s M60 engine in the BMW 520i and 518i models, Renault, Rover, Toyota, Mitsubishi and SAMAG trucks. Entertainment Line & Eugene du Plessis launched the first mobile credit card machine in South Africa with Nedbank as the banking partner. Customer Care beckoned with the introduction of the CPA Consumer Protection Act and the appointment of the first Consumer Goods and Service Ombud. The customer care call centre was based in Cape Town. Current Trends In order to keep up with the current trends in the industry, Eugene started exploring avenues to introduce social media into the Customer Care arena. With the phenomena and the success of social media in the mainstream marketing, where it has matured and is now an accepted platform to communicate and to provide an immediate response mechanism on mobile, laptop and PC’s devices.
